One of the homes that we decorated in 2013 came to us as a referral from Shay at Pinch of Charm Weddings. Our male client works out of town the majority of the time and had spent most of 2013 in Hawaii (not a bad gig, huh?)! We never met face to face, but spoke on the phone and via email. When I asked him what he thought he might want as his theme, he said tropical. Then I started digging a little deeper to get to know him so that we could personalize the decorations for him. He was newly divorced, lived in a very old home with lots of character near Chesapeake Ave in Hampton. You could see the Chesapeake Bay from his front porch. He wanted to come back to Hampton in mid-December from Hawaii and arrive home to a decorated house.
I had always wanted to decorate a Christmas tree to look like a rainbow and since the rainbow is the symbol of Hawaii I pitched it to him and asked him to trust me.He agreed! The 9 1/2 foot tree turned out great and could be seen well from the street from it’s location in his sun room on the front of the house. I also put two live 3 foot Christmas trees on his porch and decorated them with the same ornaments as the inside tree. The porch has a large window in the middle and 2 doors on either side, so I put matching wreaths on all three of them. The wind was the optical at this location. I think I rode by the house 5 times prior to the client arriving home to make sure that it was all still in tact.
The client LOVED the decorations and was very appreciative of the hand work involved. Hard work? Heck…I had FUN stepping out of the traditional Christmas box.
